The 2024 AIGA Design Conference: Exploring MARGINS and Expanding Design Horizons

The 2024 AIGA Design Conference, held online from October 10th – 12th, embraces the theme of MARGINS. The theme invites designers to step beyond the conventional and explore the edges of design, culture, and society. MARGINS focuses on amplifying diverse voices, practices, and perspectives that often go unnoticed, challenging attendees to rethink what it means to be part of the design community.

Among the dynamic lineup of speakers is Justin Dauer, a design leader, author, and speaker whose impact on both the digital and human-centered design landscapes is renowned. As the founder of the design agency Anomali by Design and a former VP of Design at CVS Health, Justin has long been an advocate for fostering connection through design. His philosophy centers on the belief that creating meaningful cultural connections within teams and with users is the key to excellent design outcomes. He often speaks about the intersection of design, culture, and compassion.

Ashleigh Axios, a strategic creative leader who uses design to drive positive change across business, healthcare, and civic sectors. She previously served as Chief Experience and Operating Officer at Coforma, a digital consultancy focused on solving government challenges, and led the in-house creative agency at Automattic. Axios also served as Creative Director and Digital Strategist in the Obama White House.

Dr. Cheryl D. Miller is a graphic designer, educator, and author renowned for her work in advocating for the inclusion of BIPOC designers. As the founder of Cheryl D. Miller Design, Inc., she has led efforts to address inequity in the design industry through activism, writing, and research. She currently serves as Professor of DEI in communication design at the Art Center College of Design and is a past AIGA Medalist and Cooper Hewitt “Design Visionary” awardee. Her professional research is archived at Stanford University and Cooper Union.

The 2024 AIGA Design Conference promises to be a space for challenging traditional design paradigms and fostering inclusion. With its theme of MARGINS, the event will provide opportunities to connect with thought leaders who are pushing the boundaries of design, creativity, and culture.
